Dr. Dees Summer Newsletter:
Happy Summer Everyone,
In summer, stick with light, cooling foods in the tradition of traditional Chinese medicine. These foods include fruits like strawberries, apple, pear, and plum; vegetables like summer squash, broccoli, cauliflower, and corn; and spices and seasonings like peppermint and cilantro.
10 Tips for Staying Healthy in Summer
- Stay cool and hydrated. Drink water, at least two to four cups (16-32 ounces) upon rising, and similar amounts if you are going out for activities and exercise. Carry water with you in a hard plastic container (more stable polycarbonate rather than polyethylene that leaches plastic into the water). You may also use a traveling water filter. Check your local water stores or www.realgoods.com. Most people need two to three quarts of liquid per day, and more in hot weather or with sweating and exercise. Dr, Dees recommends Fortune Delight with Electrosport and Sunnydew from Sunrider.
- While enjoying the sun and outdoors, protect yourself from overexposure to sunlight by wearing a hat and using natural sunscreens without excessive chemicals. Carry Aloe Vera gel for overexposure and have an aloe plant growing in your home for any kind of burn. The cooling and healing gel inside the leaves will soothe any sunburn. It works great. Dr. Dees recommends all the Oi-Lin organic sunscreen products from Sunrider.
- Keep up or begin an exercise program. Aerobic activity is important for keeping the heart strong and healthy. If you only work out in a health club, take some time to do outdoor refreshing activities -- hiking, biking, swimming, or tennis. Reconnecting with these activities will help keep your body and mind aligned.
- Enjoy Nature's bounty – fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables at their organic best. Consuming foods that are cooling and light -- fresh fruits, vegetable juices, raw vital salads, and lots of water -- will nourish your body for summertime activities. Include some protein with one or two meals. There are a number of light, nourishing proteins that don't require cooking. Most of these complement fruits and vegetables nicely-- nuts, seeds, sprouted beans, soy products, yogurt, kefir, and cottage cheese. Fish and poultry can also be eaten. Dr. Dees recommends Nuplus, Vitashake, Sunbars and Nupuffs from Sunrider.
- Take some special summer time activities with your family, kids, and friends who share the enjoyment of outdoors. Plan a fun trip if you're able and motivated for a day or longer -- hiking in the wild, camping, playing at the river, or a few days resting at the ocean. Rekindling our Earth connection has benefits that last beyond this season, continuing to enrich the whole of your life.
- Relax and breathe. You've been working hard. This is the season to slow the pace a bit and absorb the light that stimulates your hormonal message center. Leave your cell phone at home or take a week off from TV. In many European countries, most of the population has a month off during the summer.
- Sun teas are wonderful. Use flowers and leaves (or tea bags) in a clear half- or one-gallon glass jar filled with spring water. Hibiscus or red clover flowers, peppermint, chamomile, or lemon grass are all good choices, or use your local herbs and flowers that you learn are safe, flavorful, and even medicinal. Leave in the sun for two hours or up to a whole day. Moon teas can also be made to enhance your lunar, dreamy side by letting your herbs steep in the cooling, mystical moonlight. Add a little orange or lemon peel, or a sprig of rosemary and a few jasmine flowers. Dr. Dees recommends Calli mint, regular, cinnamon and night. Fortune Delight peach, raspberry, cinnamon and regular. Vitafruit from Sunrider.
- Nutritional supplements can support you with a greater amount of physical energy, enhancing your summer activities. The B-complex vitamins are calming to the nervous system "Vitaspray" and helpful for cellular energy production, while vitamin C "Citric C" and the other antioxidants "Metabalance 44" protect your body from stress, chemical pollutants, and the biochemical by-products of exercise. Helpful summer herbs are Siberian ginseng "Wu Chi Pi "as an energy tonic and stress protector, "dong quai" is a tonic for women, is good for the heart.
- Use the summer months to deepen the spiritual awakening begun in the spring. Begin by checking your local bookstore or the web for ideas that interest you. Plan a vacation that incorporates these new interests and provides you time to read, relax, contemplate, and breathe.
- Above all, give yourself the time to truly experience Nature. This can happen, even in a city park, if you relax and let in your surroundings. When traveling, take activities for the family and your first aid kit for bites, bee stings, and injuries. "Sunbreeze balm and oil" Check for ticks after your hikes. Watch for overexposure, take time in the shade, and drink your water
There really is no product equal to SunSmile® Fruit & Vegetable Rinse. Dr. Chen considers this product one of his best formulas and we use it in our own manufacturing facilities. SunSmile® Fruit & Vegetable Rinse cleans dirt, waxy coatings, oily substances, and other undesirable residues from your fruits and vegetables. It even cleans delicate produce like broccoli heads, field greens, and herbs. The primary cleansing agent is a biodegradable surfactant derived from corn starch and corn oil and does not contain harmful residues. Every household should use this product as part of a healthy lifestyle.
This is one impressive product where you can see and taste the difference immediately. Take a few minutes and soak a piece of broccoli in a bowl of regular water and another piece of broccoli in a bowl of water with Fruit & Vegetable Rinse. (See demonstration http://www.sunrider.com/Eng/webform/products/ProductDemo.aspx?Page=2) Let it soak for five minutes. When you bring the broccoli out you will see and taste a major difference. The broccoli rinsed in F&V Rinse will look profoundly greener and less waxy and will taste far less bitter when eaten raw. We use it not only to rinse our foods, but to clean surfaces where we will be preparing food. Also when you travel, with as many contamination problems in the world, wouldn't you feel safer with a little extra insurance.
Fill your kitchen sink with water. Add F&V Rinse to the water, 1 cap/gallon of water. For fruit and vegetables, soak for 1- 5 minutes. Pat dry or use straight out of the solution. For waxy coatings, dip fruit and vegetables in diluted solution for at least 5 minutes and wipe dry. |

SUNSMILE HERBAL TOOTHPASTE
Manufactured by Sunrider International
The Sun Smile herbal toothpaste is a regenerative, fluoride-free toothpaste. It is four times more concentrated than commercial brands, and does not contain sugar, saccharine, or sodium laurel sulfate.
The key feature to this product is that it cleans with enzymes.
Key Ingredients:
Neem Tree Bark: Neem tree branches have been used as “toothbrushes” in India for centuries. People would break a stem from the neem tree and chew the end until it became soft and brush like. They would then scrub their teeth and gums with the stem. Neem is helpful in preventing bacterial buildup. Unwanted buildup results in tartar, which precedes plaque, which is the start of poor quality gums. Consistent use helps with cleaning and slowing the buildup of tartar, plaque and cavities.
Chlorophyll: A natural deodorizer, which has an obvious purpose in toothpaste.
Bicarbonate of Soda: More commonly known as baking soda, this is an old remedy that is good for cleaning and polishing the teeth.
Enzymes: These help to digest protein and food particles between the teeth that may not be reached by brushing. Dr. Chen says to leave the toothpaste in your mouth a while to allow more time for the enzymes to work. The fruit enzyme bromelian and papain are in the formula to naturally break down food particles missed by flossing.
Camellia Extract: Some of the herbs used in the Calli tea formula are also included in the toothpaste. This source of polyphenols is also a great source of anti-oxidants, so important for healthy and strong gums. (Calli is a concentrated, green tea- based herbal beverage designed to nourish the cleansing systems of the body).
We don’t have fluoride in our toothpaste. Dr. Chen submitted our toothpaste to the American Dental Association. Their report came back that it is a superior toothpaste in every way – but because it doesn’t have fluoride in it, they couldn’t approve it.
Another great benefit is that if you do eat something after brushing, our SunSmile toothpaste doesn’t affect the taste buds and make your food taste strange, as does regular toothpaste. It tastes great because of the natural clove oil, cassia seed extract, eucalyptus oil, peppermint oil and licorice extract.
Ingredients: Sorbitol, Water, Xylitol, Hydrated Silica, Glycerin, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Sodium Cocoyl Sarcosinate, PEG-32, Pathenol, Bisabolol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove), Flower Oil, Eucalyptus Globules Leaf Oil, Menthe Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Melia Azadirachta Extract (Neem Tree), Cassia Senna Seed Extract, Magnolia Biondii Flower Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Carrageenan, Pectin, Sodium Bicarbonate, Cellulose Gum Carbomer, Chlorophyllin-Copper Complex, Calcium Carbonate, Titanium Dioxide, Bromelain, Papain, Allantoin, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Triethanolamine, Natural Flavors.
Sunsmile Whitening Gel: A natural, gentle way to whiten your teeth. Put a pea size drop on your brush along with your Sunsmile toothpaste each time you brush. It is 100% non-abrasive, doesn’t hurt or make teeth sensitive, and uses no bleach. There is no harm to the teeth and gums. It uses an oxygenation process to whiten and brighten the teeth, then it turns to water after 20-25 minutes. There is also a mouth appliance that can be used with the gel. Leave the Whitening Gel in the appliance on your teeth for about 20 minutes. Use sparingly in the appliance as too much will cause you to “froth at the mouth!”

It contains the protective ingredient clove oil, peroxide, neem extract, and grape extract, which can reduce the harmful effects of decaying food in the mouth, but do not harm the delicate tissue of the cheeks and gums. Add a few drops to 6 oz. of water and rinse. Or use one drop on your toothbrush along with Sunsmile toothpaste. It stops bacteria from growing in the mouth for up to four hours after rinsing. It’s also great to use on a wound, cut, paper cuts, or scrapes. The Refresher Drops boost the effect of the Whitening Gel. The have a common ingredient with the Fruit and Vegetable Rinse, Benzoine extract, which is made from corn and coconut. Refresher Drops are great to gargle with against sore throats and strep.
Ingredients: Glycerin, Sorbitol, Urea Peroxide Natural Flavor, sodium Methyl Cocyl Taurate, Polysorbate 20, Eucalyptus Globulous Leaf Oil, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove) Flower Oil, Menthol, Stevia Rebaudiana extract, Melia Aradirachta Leaf Extract (Neem Tree), Orchi Mascula Flower Extract, (Orchid), Styrax Benzoin Resin Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape), Fruit Extract, Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Extract, Lactuca Scariola Sativa (Lettuce) Extract, Chyrsanthemum Indiucum Flower Extract, Citric Acid.
